Isaiah |
The Book of Isaiah is a book of the Bible traditionally attributed to
the Prophet Isaiah, who lived in the second half of the 8th century BC. In the
first 39 chapters, Isaiah prophesies doom for a sinful Judah and for all the
nations of the world that oppose God. The last 27 chapters prophesy the
restoration of the nation of Israel. This section includes the Songs of the
Suffering Servant.
There is considerable debate about the dating of the text, with most
contemporary scholars considering that much if not most of the text was not
written in the 8th century BC. The text is also considered to have two major
sections, the later part (chapters 40 to 55) being known as Deutero-Isaiah (or
Second Isaiah), is said to derive from a later author or authors. Deutero-Isaiah
includes prophecies of a new creation in God's glorious future kingdom.
